Located in the Western region of the country and shared between the Republics of Costa Rica and Panama, La Amistad International Park has an area of 207000 hectares, with an altitude range in Panama of 90 meters in the Caribbean region of Wekso, integral part of a indigenous community, to 3279 meters of Fabrega Hill, the highest mountain of the park. It also encloses a refuge equipped for scientists and visitors in the well-known area of Las Nubes at Cerro Punta, at 2200 meters above sea level.

The park has several trails for visitors like La Cascada ("The Waterfall") natural trail and El Retoño ("The sprout") trail among others. The main characteristic of the park forests is the great diversity of plants and its tall trees, like the Roble Quercus sp. (Fagaceae), Roble de Vaco (magnolia) Magnolia sp. (Magnoliaceae) and species of fast growth like Alnus acuminata (Betulaceae).
